So I attended Design4Drupal conference for the first time this year. I came to learn about this event through a member I see regularly from the BostonPHP users group that I attend monthly. This had to be one of the best design camps I have ever gone to where it was not heavily code centric and design was a core subject matter with some code examples sprinkled in here and there. Plus I did not feel intimidated around others when letting them know I was new to learning Drupal and felt very welcomed. I thought the subject matter in each session was not only informative but transferable in other web development areas outside of Drupal. Here are some of my notes and resources taken from this event from some of the session tracks I went to.

BOOK DESCRIPTION

I was one of thousands of people to receive the next round of invitations for Google Glass. And responded immediately to the email invites that Google sent out with a code to acquire the device. The big draw for me was the “exclusivity” and being part of a niche user group to be considered a “Glass Explorer” and test out this new piece of technology.

Online Typography (@font-face)
I love lynda.com training videos that cover an array of topics in web development. When I last logged in I came across a new video series called “Web Fonts First Look” by James Williamson. I thought this series was incredibly helpful and learned a lot more about typography for the web than I think I could have from 1 or 2 books on the subject.
Throughout the video tutorial, James Williamson works on a project called Alice in Web Fonts to demonstrate various techniques in web typography. He demonstrates with a few other fonts but one in particular called JUNCTION which I thought looked really nice! (Must consider using it in a project at a later date!)
Below are some of the notes I took as well as a lot of the resources mentioned from the video lessons.
Growing up TV was very much influential as tuning into content created and consumed online today. There are quite a handful of shows and movies that have influenced the way I thought about technology and art. I loved how well technology was weaved in and around the various storylines of these shows. Thought it was pretty cool to think that some things presented back then would become a reality in the future in indeed become realities of today! Also enjoyed the mystery side for some of these shows and the critical thinking process’ these characters go thru. Not to mention some of the shows clearly had a few leading ladies which was nice to see!
I was first introduced to computers like most Xennials in grade school by something called “Logo Writer“. This was probably around grade school along 3rd or 4th grade. This program allowed the user to move a turtle graphic around the screen that could output a vector line with basic input commands. It was a like a HUGE deal back then as PCs were not quite yet in the home and programs like this were not in every school system. Can vaguely remember the teacher also having a physical turtle robot about the height of a child’s chair that you could sync with the computer via a ribbon cable so the commands carried over to this device could make those same moves in real life.

So this is my first post in the blog world! WordPress has been around for ages. I have read or come across many articles on it, installed it once but really never got around to actually using it. But it seems that I always bump into someone who uses it for a clients website or to display their own portfolio of work with it.
I’ve been to a few local meetings that discuss this easy-to-use CMS and I have been meaning to learn it for some time. So I figure the best way to learn the ins-and-outs for creating customized theme’s and plug-in’s is to take an active approach to it and actually use it!
